After 6 p.m. on weekdays, traffic builds quickly along the nearly 600-metre stretch of Second Avenue in Ashok Nagar, from the Ashok Nagar police station to the junction where P.T. Rajan Salai meets 100 Feet Road, better known as the Lakshman Sruthi signal.

What was a fairly calm road just a few hours earlier transforms into a loud, impatient swarm of honking cars, bikes squeezing through gaps, and commuters inching forward in frustration. "Sometimes, it takes us 10-15 minutes just to cross the signal towards P.T. Rajan Salai," says a commuter. The Lakshman Sruthi signal, named after the once-popular music store in the area, is a key junction, connecting Koyambedu with Guindy through 100 Feet Road, and T. Nagar with K.K. Nagar. The latter stretch is now a one-way, with traffic from P.T. Rajan Salai to the Second Avenue restricted because of the Metro Rail construction on Arcot Road.
