Holiday home owners 'hit with council tax bills'

HOLIDAY home owners in Wales say they are receiving backdated council tax bills of thousands of pounds, adding more strain to those in the sector who say they are already operating on a “cliff-edge”.

Some owners say they have had bills of £10,000.

The substantial bills arise from a technicality about the number of nights a property has been rented out. Many owners believed they had satisfied letting thresholds set by Welsh Government, and would not be liable for council tax.

Yet some say they have received council tax demands of tens of thousands with payment demanded within seven days, or legal action will follow.
