HERE, Dr Oliver Wakefield, regional geologist at the British Geological Survey (BGS) answers our questions about rocks and minerals.
Why are rocks different colours?
They're made of different minerals, and each mineral has its own colour. Some have lots. Iron can make rocks look red or orange, while copper can make them look green or blue. Some times, the way light hits the rock or how it formed also changes its colour.
What is the world's rarest stone?
One of the rarest stones in the world is called Painite, which was found in the 1950s by a gentleman called Arthur Pain - hence Painite.
