Make like Charles III and be inspired by his Highgrove collection of this stately plant
HIS Majesty King Charles is well known for his passion for plants and cheerfully admits to chatting to them.
One of his favourite plants is the hosta and at his home in Highgrove, he holds the national collection of large-leaved hostas.
These grow happily in the damp and shady conditions of The Stumpery, a collection of upturned dead tree stumps, alongside other shade-lovers such as ferns and gunneras.
Hostas originate from Japan, China and Korea and are woodland perennial plants grown mainly for their elegant foliage. With thousands of cultivars now available, while mainly heart-shaped, the leaves also can be oval or elongated. There is also plenty to choose from in terms of leaf colour, ranging from green to chartreuse, yellow, bluey green as well as cream and yellow variegations. They produce attractive pale lilac or white flowers on tall stalks during the summer.
