Ministers respond to calls for school phone ban

THE Welsh Government has responded to calls from teachers to consider a blanket ban on mobile phones in schools.

A forum has been set up to consider the matter.

At the moment it is up to individual schools to decide whether or not to ban pupils using mobile phones.

Different policies are in force across Wales.

Some schools enforce a ban, others allow pupils to bring phones in but say they must be switched off and others lock them away securely until home time.

A motion to ask the Welsh Government to consider a blanket ban was passed by members at the conference of teaching union NEU Cymru.

Members said phones in schools were part of rising problems of violence and disengagement in schools.
