'Fragile' arts sector 'in danger' after years of cuts

THE Welsh arts sector remains “in danger” as it struggles with 40% less funding in real terms than 15 years ago, the head of the Arts Council of Wales has warned.
Dafydd Rhys told the Senedd's culture committee that the Welsh Government's proposed “business-as-usual” budget, rising only in line with inflation, would in practice mean further cuts.
“It would be disappointing. The sector is in a vulnerable position and it would have an impact on our ability to provide adequate support. We would have to make some very difficult decisions,” he said.
Mr Rhys explained that had funding kept pace with inflation since 2010, the Arts Council would have around £50m to spend rather than its current £34m.
