Salute to D-Day hero Stan who turns 100
Somerset Guardian
|May 08, 2025
A remarkable Somerset D-Day veteran who survived his Allied ship being hit by a torpedo has enjoyed a very special 100th birthday party surrounded by his family and friends.
-
Stan Ford, from Bath, suffered a fractured spine and injuries to both legs on the day his ship HMS Fratton was sunk off the Normandy coast on August 18, 1944.
Thirty-eight of the ship's crew were rescued, however 31 lost their lives.
Stan continues to dedicate himself to honouring the memory of those who served, including being appointed as an Ambassador for the British Normandy Memorial in 2022.
A life-size banner of Stan has been created as part of the Standing With Giants project to celebrate this week’s 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The banner is being displayed at Bath & North East Somerset Council’s The Guildhall as a visual tribute to Stan’s heroism.
