Pupils' lesson in safety thanks to protective railings
Shields Gazette
|April 02, 2026
Pupils at a South Tyneside school are being kept safe behind bars - after new protective railings were installed to keep passing traffic at a distance.
Pupils at West Boldon Primary School stand behind the new railings.
The youngsters have taken a shine to the barriers, fitted with council cash outside West Boldon Primary School, in Hindmarch Drive, as have staff.
They hope the 25-metre-long stretch of metal will help to manage pedestrian movement and create a safer and better organised environment during the busiest times of the school day.
Another benefit is that careless drivers can no longer park immediately outside the entrance, which had been a cause of concern.
Headteacher Linsey Garr said a clearer separation between pedestrians and the road would reduce risk.
