Weekly bin collections set to come to an end

REPORT STATES THAT FORTNIGHTLY COLLECTION IS THE 'ONLY OPTION'
-
WEEKLY rubbish collections are set to end, with wheelie bins introduced for households from April next year.
Sevenoaks councillors will be told they must “urgently” overhaul the council's waste collection service, which is currently so stretched it is on the brink of failing.
Residents will have two wheelie bins - one for recycling and one for general waste - with each collected on alternate weeks.
Glass will be included with the recycling, and food waste will also be collected, to bring the council in line with new laws from April 1.
The council will need 21 new trucks, 110,000 new 240-litre wheelie bins and 55,000 food caddies. In total it will cost more than £9 million, covered in part by Government funding.
Some Sevenoaks district councillors have previously lauded the fact it is one of very few authorities which still takes away residents’ rubbish every week. Council leader Roddy Hogarth listed protecting the district's weekly collections in his top priorities when he took over last May as his predecessor Julia Thornton had done when she became leader two years ago.
