MP sets out three stages to securing steelworks future

THERE are three stages to securing Scunthorpe steelworks long-term future, the town's MP has outlined.

Sir Nic Dakin MP (Labour - Scunthorpe) said currently it is only “the end of the beginning’ of this. In an interview with Scunthorpe Live, Sir Nic praised the Labour Government, which he is a Justice Minister in, for its “very bold decision” to recall Parliament during the Easter break and take control of British Steel.

Because British Steel’s owners Jingye Group were not engaging in support package talks, or taking up a Government offer to pay for furnace raw materials, “the Government had to make the really big call.” He said it showed “very strongly and publicly that UK infrastructure steel is something not only for the past, not only for now but is something for the future”.
