People have long wanted to talk to their dead loved ones and hear secrets from the beyond, but now pet owners are getting in on the trend, seeking help from psychics to help them understand what's going on in their animals' minds.

I'm dying to know what my cat Humphrey, a British Blue shorthair, thinks about, so I booked a session with Jackie Weaver, a celebrity psychic who has done readings for Coronation Street legend Bill Roache's dogs and actor Matthew Rhys' horses.

As Humphrey, 10, meets Jackie at our house, he jumps on the kitchen table and rolls on to his side looking at her enticingly to lure her in. But then as she strokes him, he goes in for the kill, whacking her hand several times with his paw, his tail lashing away furiously in the background. To my surprise Jackie just laughs and replies to him, "You told me you weren't mean".

But after that bumpy introduction, Jackie insists they're "chatting away". She tells me: "I'm going to ask him to tell me about himself and see what he comes up with."
