Smith eyes achievement to match his German cracker

FOR a player whose career highlight is scoring a 30-yard screamer against Germany, you can forgive Michael Smith for not getting carried away just yet.

It’s more than six years since his fizzing daisy-cutter gave Northern Ireland a shock seventh-minute lead in front of almost 43,000 fans in Frankfurt's famous Waldstadion.

That will seem a world away when he steps out in the FA Cup second round for Weston-super-Mare at Chelmsford City’s sold-out Dunmow Group Community Stadium, holding a little more than 3,000 supporters today.

But in an atmosphere that could be every bit as hostile, the stakes, at least in relative terms, are arguably just as high.

And Smith will certainly not be getting ahead of himself, considering how the “most special moment” in his career panned out.
