Uni steps in to aid islanders feeling the winter blues

RESIDENTS in two Scottish regions will be offered mental health support when the clocks go back this weekend in a bid to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Sad fact: less daylight in the north

British Summer Time will come to an end on Sunday when the nation reverts to Greenwich Mean Time. While that means an extra hour in bed, it does mean it will get darker earlier in the evening, with the weather likely to get worse.

SAD, known as "winter depression", can last for months and is most prevalent when people get less natural daylight. About one in 30 people across the UK are thought to suffer from "significant" SAD, although there is no evidence it is more prevalent in northern parts of the country.
