Middle East on brink as Tehran strikes back at Israel for targeting nuclear sites

- By Martyn Brown Political Editor

THE Middle East teetered on the brink of war as Donald Trump said Israel might unleash "even more brutal" attacks on Iran's nuclear and military sites.

Iran last night launched 150 missiles at Israel in retaliation for the deadly strikes as Israeli jets blitzed further targets, including near a uranium enrichment plant buried half a mile inside a mountain at Fordow — considered to have been the country’s most secure base.

Blasts were heard around the capital Tehran, while the cities of Shahriar and Malard to the west were also hit.

At the same time air raid sirens sounded in Jerusalem as Iran launched ballistic missiles.

Israeli military sources said interception defences were operating. A tower block was struck in Tel Aviv with people trapped and 15 people wounded, according to medics.

Iran claimed it downed two Israeli jets and captured one pilot, which Israel denied.

President Trump urged the Iranian regime to sign an accord over restraining its nuclear programme “before there is nothing left”.

He wrote: “Two months ago I gave Iran a 60-day ultimatum to ‘make a deal’. They should have done it!

“Today is Day 61. I told them what to do, but they just couldn't get there. Now they have, perhaps, a second chance!”

Mr Trump added he was aware of the attacks in advance: “Heads-up? It wasn’t a heads-up...we know what's going on.”

His stark warning to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei came after Jerusalem’s initial missile blitz and air raids by more than 200 jets in Operation Rising Lion targeted dozens of sites across Iran including a nuclear facility in Natanz.
