New Ibrox chiefs win over doubters with slick summit

- By Andy Newport

ANDREW CAVENAGH has been a familiar face at Ibrox for months.

But yesterday’s shareholder summit at Glasgow’s DoubleTree by Hilton hotel was the first time Rangers fans got to hear from the man himself on what he has planned.

This was a chance for Light Blues legions to look into the whites of their new chairman’s eyes and assess whether they can trust him to make Rangers great again.

Cavenagh didn’t make any wild boasts or sweeping declarations. But the American health insurance tycoon and Paraag Marathe — his partner from 49ers Enterprises — certainly spoke with enough confidence and conviction to win over any sceptics during a slick 90-minute address.

Here we take a look at the big issues covered at the emergency general meeting.

A WINNING TEAM

The Americans can talk all they want about the plan to upgrade Rangers’ operations off the pitch, but the be all and end all for the supporters is that they drastically improve fortunes on it.

The challenge for Cavenagh and Co is to take a team that’s been perennially second best and make them top dogs in Scotland.

But the new owners are wary of throwing cash at a problem squad without fixing the underlying issues that have allowed Old Firm rivals Celtic to win 13 of the last 14 league titles.

“Our ambition is to put the team in a position to win the league and compete in Europe,” Cavenagh told the meeting.
