A NUCLEAR power plant that can provide enough energy for six million homes is set to be formally approved by Sir Keir Starmer.

- By Steph Spyro

The Prime Minister is also likely to give the green light to a new generation of small modular reactors in a bid to boost stagnant growth.

Ministers will consent to the building of the Sizewell C atomic plant in Suffolk before the spending review in June, it is understood.

Innovation

The plant will provide up to 7% of the UK's energy needs by the time that construction is completed in 2035, at an estimated cost of £20billion.

Rolls-Royce could benefit from the nuclear boost as it was one of four companies shortlisted last year by the Government to develop SMRs. Its chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic said in January that the UK risked losing its leadership in the race to manufacture the nuclear innovation unless the UK sped up its decision making.
