SNP fail to deliver on education vows

THREE high profile education vows from the SNP have been shattered, just months before the Holyrood election.

Broken... promise to recruit more teachers

In 2021, Nicola Sturgeon pledged to “recruit at least 3,500 additional teachers and classroom assistants”.

But this has not been met, according to the final publication of statistics before voters go to the polls.

In fact, numbers have actually declined, going from 54,285 teachers in 2021, including early learning and childcare, to 53,475 teachers in 2025.

This is also lower than in 2007, when the SNP first came to power (55,100).

The Nats aso promised to “reduce teachers’ daily contact time by an hour and a half per week to give them the time they need to lift standards”.
