Relegation sees Clarke's 'lay down a marker' challenge backfire
STEVE Clarke admitted Greece put Scotland in their place with Nations League relegation after he'd challenged his own side to lay down a World Cup marker at Hampden.
The Scots had hoped to build on their 1-0 lead from the first leg of their play-off in Athens.
Instead they were sent crashing down to League B after slumping to a 3-0 loss in Glasgow last night.
The two countries are due to cross swords again in World Cup qualifying. Both will also face Denmark in Group C after their 5-3 aggregate play-off defeat to Portugal.
Clarke said: “I am sure to finish such a positive campaign on such a low note with such a poor performance is something that will hurt the players.
