This week's report from the Royal College of Emergency (RCEM), which Medicine calculated more than 800 deaths in Scotland last year could be attributed to the SNP's dismal failure to reduce A&E waiting times,should cause the government to hang their heads in shame.

Instead Neil Gray, below, came bounding out to assure everyone that, after a long line of failed health secretaries, each with a failed recovery plan, the NHS was at last in recovery.

He may like to reassure himself with that thought, but he must know it's nonsense. Neil Gray wants to focus on the occasional - all too rare - upward tick in the statistics. But the overall picture is damning.
