Ofcom blocks BBC radio station for older listeners

TONY Blackburn blasted Ofcom with furious tweets after the broadcasting regulator rejected the BBC’s plans for a station for senior listeners.

BBC Radio 2 bosses sparked uproar when they axed veteran broadcasters such as Steve Wright and Ken Bruce in a bid to attract a younger audience.

The corporation came under fire again after a commercial company’s proposal to launch a “golden oldies” station to lure back those who had abandoned Radio 2.

Boom Radio — which went live in 2021 and was designed to appeal to “baby boomers” — welcomed former BBC stars including David Hamilton.

It is now the UK’s fastest growing commercial station.
