Nats using England as 'dumping ground' with tonnes of waste to head south

SNP MINISTERS have been left red-faced after it emerged that up to 100 truckloads of rubbish will be dumped in England each day after Scotland failed to hit recycling targets.

The Scottish Government will bring in a landfill ban at the end of this year, meaning household waste will have to go somewhere else after December 31.

However, the country doesn't have enough incinerators to manage the refuse, which could amount to 600,000 tonnes in the ban's first year.

Councils and commercial waste companies have approached rubbish-handling operators in England but most incinerators have limited spare capacity, meaning that much of the excess will be sent to landfills south of the border.

It has led to critics claiming that the SNP wants to treat its neighbours as a “dumping ground” and the party would rage if it was the other way round.
