RELIEVED SCOT BEATS DISEASE
A SCOT is encouraging more women to make regular checks for breast cancer after it was revealed almost half across the UK do not bother with self-examination.
Experts have described the finding as “a serious cause for concern” as early diagnosis gives patients a better chance of successful treatment.
Charity Breast Cancer Now’s Manveet Basra found the findings “deeply concerning” after 45% of those quizzed admitted not regularly conducting examinations.
The latest figure is a four-year high after a previous poll three years ago had the figure at 41%.
Some 11% of women interviewed in the latest survey said they have never checked their breasts.
One who did take preventative action is Carmen Lorimer, from West Lothian. The 40-year-old mother-of-two was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 after discovering a lump.
She explained: “I wasn't in the habit of regularly checking my breasts but I noticed a lump when I was in the shower one day.
