For example, NHS Fife’s Rapid Cancer Diagnostic Service is transforming care for people with vague but worrying symptoms. Patients are quickly assessed by an Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist and, if needed, fast-tracked for further tests — cutting waiting times and anxiety. Both patients and staff have praised the service for its speed, clarity, and reassurance, making it a model now being considered across Scotland.

Clinical research also plays a critical role in developing innovations, translating scientific discoveries into safer, kinder and more effective treatment.
