Tav tips Gers to win the last silverware available to them

- BY ANDY NEWPORT

WHAT unfolded on Sunday was nothing new to James Tavernier.

Scottish Cup heartache followed by scenes of shame as fans streaked across a pitch intent on wreaking havoc - we could as easily be talking about the disgraceful events of 2016 at Hampden as Rangers lost the final to Hibs instead of what just occurred at Ibrox.

In fairness to the Gers captain, what should happen to those responsible for dragging Scottish football's name through the dirt yet again is a question to be directed elsewhere.

Tavernier might bear some responsibility for missing the first spot-kick of the shootout, smashing it off the crossbar to hand Celtic the platform to edge into the semifinals.

But the right-back doesn’t need to answer for the masked morons and pyromaniacs who charged the field looking for trouble.

Those pictures of chaos will add a sour dash to an already toxic derby environment which will likely last for months, if not years, to come.

And the bitter taste left in the mouth of the captain after his team's exit will linger too.

Tavernier has now competed for 31 major domestic trophies in his 11-year spell in Glasgow and only has three winners’ medals to show for it.
