Family's torment after student son was wrongly told he couldn't graduate

- By Richard Elias

A STUDENT who took his own life after wrongly being told he couldn't graduate was “failed” by his university, his mother has claimed.

Ethan Brown killed himself on the day he should have been awarded his geography honours degree with his family tragically being completely unaware of the situation.

He was in his final year at the University of Glasgow but was incorrectly informed he had failed one module and as a result, would not be able to graduate. On the morning in December 2024 when the 23-year-old was found dead, his mother Tracy had been preparing to attend Ethan's graduation oblivious to what he had been going through.

Now, they are demanding answers as to how that tragic error was made and are asking how many other similar cases there may be. Their lawyer is also questioning the University of Glasgow's support programme for students who, like Ethan, have spoken of concerns over their mental health.

Yesterday, the family of the student from Coatbridge spoke at a press conference to outline what they wanted to achieve.

Tracy said: "My son, Ethan, was so happy to be accepted to study at the University of Glasgow.

"Ethan was a kind, caring young man who was very much loved. So, it breaks my heart to now be aware of the mental anguish this university must have caused my son.

"Ethan left this world believing he had failed and the University of Glasgow were correct. The truth is, Ethan had successfully attained a 2:1 Honours degree, despite the university informing him he had been unsuccessful.

"They failed him, not only academically but also to support him." "My son was failed from having a duty of care from the educational system, resulting in my family having been robbed from having Ethan in our lives.

"We seek justice for Ethan in the hope that other students and their families do not have to experience the pain that myself and my family will have to live with forever."
