Energy bills drop of £129 'not enough'

A FALL of £129 in energy bills will not be enough to help people on the lowest incomes, campaigners warn.

They say the 7% drop when the new energy price cap comes into effect on July 1 is not sufficient to lift the burden on older people struggling to heat their homes.

Regulator Ofgem says the new cap, which limits what suppliers can charge per unit of gas and electricity, means the average annual bill will fall to £1,720. Direct debit and pre-payment customers’ standing charges will be reduced by about £19 a year.

However, bills remain higher than this time last year. The new rate is £152 (10%) more than in July 2024.
