HOPES have been raised that Scotland's busiest railway station has avoided any major structural damage in a blaze which devastated neighbouring buildings.
have been working on the blaze which closed Glasgow's Central Station since Sunday
Glasgow Central Station remains closed after Sunday's blaze but initial fears for the future of the B-listed property now seem to be unfounded.
And in an update last night, Network Rail said the low level station will reopen for train services from this morning. But the high level station will not open this week.
It is estimated that it will cost "tens of millions" just to repair the glass roof with one expert warning parts of the station could be "closed for a long time".
Despite this, experts are confident that overall the building, much-loved by train enthusiasts and architectural aficionados alike, will not need to be demolished.
The news comes as a fundraiser for the dozens of shops and businesses - many of which have been completely destroyed by the fire - topped £150,000.
The blaze, which broke out in a vape shop located adjacent to the station, has led to major disruption for rail commuters, bus passengers and the public in general.
Diversions and cordons remain in place as investigators try to assess the exact amount of damage to the buildings located on what is known as Union Square.
Collapse
Engineers from Network Rail — which owns and manages the majority of Britain's biggest stations — are continuing their initial exploration of the site.
