Scottish Daily Express
|September 05, 2025
THE death toll in the Lisbon streetcar crash rose to 16 as two people died from their injuries yesterday.
The first fatality to be named was the doomed funicular’s brake guard André Marques.
Two more identities were revealed last night - former volleyball referee Pedro Trinidade and lawyer Alda Matias.
She reportedly worked for the Santa Casa da Misericórdia charity, which helps the sick, disabled and orphans. Bosses said four of the five Portuguese victims identified among the dead worked for them and used the streetcar to reach their offices.
All the dead were adults. Two were Korean and one Swiss. Officials were almost certain the dead included a German, two Canadian, a Ukrainian and an American. Three remained unidentified.
A child of three was among 21 people hurt on Wednesday evening.
The range of nationalities underlined how big an international draw the iconic yellow carriages are. Portugal observed a day of nationwide mourning yesterday.
