The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), in collaboration with Philadelphia’s Office of Public Safety’s Overdose Response Unit (ORU) and first responders from the Philadelphia Fire Department, launched an initiative called Naloxone in Black.
-

This program aims to address the increasing number of overdoses among Black Pennsylvanians by placing free, accessible naloxone boxes throughout the city.
Naloxone is a medication approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose, restoring breathing to individuals whose respiratory function has slowed or stopped.
The naloxone for this initiative is funded and supplied through DDAP’s Overdose Prevention Program. Nearly 50,000 doses of Narcan, a popular brand of naloxone available as a nasal spray, will be stocked in newspaper-style boxes located at Philadelphia fire stations.
