Imagine being a youth from Philadelphia, living in the inner city, and for some perhaps, never having traveled further than Atlantic City, New Jersey, or maybe to Hershey Park, or Great Adventure.

From Philadelphia to Ghana and back home again

Then, one day, thanks to a positive program their child is part of, they get to visit the Motherland, Africa, and witness firsthand what life is like in some parts of Ghana.

Enter Anton Moore, the Founder of a nonprofit organization called Unity In The Community. Mr. Moore launched the nonprofit organization, Unity in the Community, sixteen years ago, so I guess you could say this is their “sweet sixteenth” year of being in existence. Over the past four years, the organization has planned and organized numerous philanthropic initiatives dedicated to changing the lives of others in South Philadelphia, particularly youth.

When Black kids are doing something negative, oddly, it always seems so easy to track those kinds of stories on the news and in the news. However, when our youth are focused and trying to reach for the stars, and in many instances, meeting with success, those stories don’t often get told.

In today's column, I'm sharing with our readers the story of how Anton Moore and his supporters and sponsors helped to make it possible for twenty youth from Philadelphia to go to where their ancestors came from.

Anton Moore shares the story of how he got the ball rolling on a trip to Africa over the summer of 2025, for some of the youth he works with.
