No arrests in R120m Satawu funds misappropriation case

COLD CASE
MORE than seven years after a criminal case was opened against former South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) Secretary General Dr Zenzo Mahlangu and businessman Bongani Mhlanga, there have been no arrests or prosecutions, raising serious questions about the country's criminal and justice system.
The case, opened in 2018, emanates from allegations of misappropriation of union funds amounting to more than R120 million. According to an affidavit by former Satawu General Secretary Jack Mazibuko, Mahlangu, deported by Home Affairs to Zimbabwe in May 2017, and Mhlanga orchestrated a series of unauthorised transactions and created a network of companies, which were allegedly used as vehicles to siphon union funds under the guise of investments.
