India's inaugural prototype fast-breeder reactor (PFBR) located in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu is anticipated to be commissioned next year following nearly two years of regulatory approvals. This pivotal development will advance India's three-stage nuclear programme, designed to close spent fuel and mitigate radioactive waste.

The Kalpakkam PFBR, distinguished as the first of its kind in India, will employ plutonium-mixed oxide fuel and utilise liquid sodium as coolant.
