E-waste to be addressed by RLM Pilot Project

The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Bernice Swarts attended the North West service delivery Imbizo and the launch of the E-waste Recycling Pilot Project of Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM) on Wednesday, 14 May.

Other attendees included the MEC for North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Bitsa Lenkopane, Acting Executive Mayor of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality, Ignatius Msoki, the Mayor of Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM), Shiela Mabale-Huma and local traditional leaders.

In her keynote address, Deputy Minister Swarts mentioned the issue of tackling climate change through the planting of trees. "President Cyril Ramaphosa mandated our department to lead the implementation of his Presidential Ten Million Trees Programme. This programme aims to plant ten million trees in a period of five years. To support this campaign, the DFFE is leaving 500 trees here in Rustenburg to plant or donate to households."

The Minister also launched the E-Waste Recycling Pilot Project in RLM, tackling one of the world's most urgent environmental challenges: electronic waste (e-waste).
