Students close to DofE award after challenging 2-day hike

FORTY-FOUR students from Haslingden High School took to the hills to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze practice expedition and are now all ready to finish their award.

The Year 10 students have completed four disciplines - learnt a skill, volunteered, undertook a physical and the practice expedition.

Lilia Paintin, Kirsty McGovern and Freya Cookson, all 15, along with four others, were in one of the teams hiking at the weekend.

Carrying their tents, sleeping bags and cooking equipment, they went from Edenfield Cricket Ground, over the moors via Waugh's Well and down to Norden. They camped overnight at Ashworth Valley Scout Camp and then walked back to Rossendale.

Six teachers gave up their weekend to ensure the students completed the challenge safely over a very hot and sunny weekend.
