In 1899, John D. Rockefeller founded the General Education Board, which poured millions into shaping America’s school system.

His goal? Not enlightenment, but efficiency. I don’t want a nation of thinkers, he allegedly said, I want a nation of workers.

Fast forward to today, and little has changed. Schools still operate like factories—bells ring, students move in lines, and standardized tests measure compliance, not intelligence. The late Sir Ken Robinson, a leading education reformist, famously declared:

Schools kill creativity. They educate people out of their natural talents.

Students sat in rows. Bells dictated movement. Memorization was prioritized over critical thinking. This model was later exported to America by Horace Mann, the Father of Public Education, who admired Prussia’s efficiency. The goal, Produce citizens who would follow orders, not question them.
