The birthday of Bharat Ratna, successful administrator, philosopher, writer and great educationist, the second President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, is celebrated as National Teachers’ Day.
When Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was working as the President, his friends and students had appealed to him to celebrate his birthday. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan said, "I would feel very proud if Teachers’ Day was celebrated on September 5 instead of celebrating my birthday." Since then, National Teachers' Day is celebrated on September 5 every year.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan served the society a lot in the field of education. He even donated the money he received as the Templeton Prize in 1975 to Oxford University. He remained associated with education throughout his life, due to which Dr. Radhakrishnan had a great influence on Indians in the field of education after the country got independence.
