The fatal shooting of a 5-year-old boy allegedly by his older brother has sparked calls for stricter gun safety regulations.
Yusha Peer, of Northcliff, Johannesburg, was killed last Sunday while he and his brother were seated in a vehicle. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and the negligent handling of a firearm.
Johan Booysen, crime expert and former head of the Hawks, said while high levels of crime had resulted in more and more South Africans obtaining guns for protection, it was, however, unfortunate that gun owners were irresponsible, leading to accidental shootings among children.
