Heritage Day for a united South Africa

Post

|

September 23, 2025

EVERY year on September 24 which is Heritage Day, South Africans gather around braai fires, don traditional attire, and celebrate the country's rich cultural tapestry.

In many neighbourhoods, the air is thick with laughter and the comforting scent of meat kissed by flame. Heritage Day has also become known as National Braai Day, symbolising togetherness across cultures in the "Rainbow Nation".

Alas, the aroma of a braai is a battlefield for the senses for a sizeable section of the Indian community who abstain from meat during the Hindu religious periods of Purtassi and Navarathri.

For them, the smoky allure of sizzling chops becomes a test of willpower.

But beneath the festive surface lies a deeper truth: Heritage Day is not just about food or fun - it's about identity, unity and the ongoing work of nation-building.

In a country as culturally rich and historically complex as South Africa, Heritage Day should be a moment of reflection. More than a culinary celebration, it's a day to honour the languages, customs and stories that survived colonisation, apartheid and displacement.

Postpartum depression: a matter we must not ignore

THE months after the birth of a baby are often described as a season of joy and celebration. For many families, however, this period can also be a time of challenge, stress and vulnerability.
