An uMhlanga woman’s life-changing experience
Post
|April 23, 2025
ANDREA Govender Singh, a member of the Parish of the Blessed Sacrament in Virginia, Durban, said as a Catholic, she had the privilege of attending a World Youth Day celebration in Poland with Pope Francis.

“It was a life-changing experience. I attended the World Youth Day celebrations in 2016. The event is organised by the Catholic Church, where young people from all over the world get together to connect, reflect, and celebrate life and faith. It is not just about religion. It is also about cultural exchange, community, and finding purpose.
“The programme usually includes music festivals, talks, community service, and big gatherings, including one with Pope Francis,” said Singh.
Singh, from uMhlanga, said she gathered with other youth at the overnight vigil and waited in anticipation to meet Pope Francis.
“The energy was electric. We followed the pope's arrival, being screened and waited eagerly for him to pass us pilgrims. I'll never forget when he drew near, how, despite the bustle, a certain stillness fell over the crowd.
“I was about two metres away from him. He looked in my direction and instantly I felt a calmness that only the Holy Spirit could provide. His aura exuded holiness, and I will forever cherish the peace I felt being near the Holy Father,” added Singh.
She said her heart sank when she heard about Pope Francis’ death.
