Polokwane Observer
|March 19, 2026
Seven suspects appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court last Wednesday and Friday in connection with an alleged insurance murder scheme linked to former police officer Rachel Shokane-Kutumela (43).
The arrests were made last Tuesday in the city and Moletjie.
The accused are Thomas Shokane (50), William Shokane (41) - both brothers of Kutumela - her husband David Kutumela (52), as well as Damaris Selepe (38), Benedictor Mataba (38) and Martha Ruiters, a sister to Anna Shokane's late former husband.
Another suspect, Robert Shokane, handed himself over to the police on Thursday after national police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe urged him last Wednesday to surrender at the nearest police station.
The accused face a total of 47 charges, including nine counts related to murder, fraud, money laundering and receiving proceeds of criminal activities.
