New conductor appointed for first time in two decades
A celebrated Scottish conductor and pianist has been announced as the new conductor and musical director for the city's renowned Perth Symphony Orchestra.
Sam McLellan is set to take on the iconic role following the retiral of musical stalwart Allan Young MBE, who was the conductor of the orchestra from 1998 before hanging up his baton last year.
The city's orchestra praised Perth man Sam as they announced his appointment, stating he “brings a rare combination of musical excellence, international experience, and a deep connection to his hometown, marking an exciting new chapter for Perth's local orchestra”.
A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, where he studied piano with Peter Evans and won the Ian Pitt-Watson Memorial Prize for Conducting, McLellan went on to complete a Masters of Philosophy in Musicology at the University of Cambridge.
There, under the supervision of Professor John Rink, he explored leadership philosophies in modern orchestral conducting—an area of study that continues to inform his practice on the podium.
Throughout his academic and professional journey, McLellan has led a wide variety of ensembles, including university orchestras, choral groups, and opera societies.
He was also Conducting Fellow for three seasons with the prestigious Edinburgh Royal Choral Union.
