R590 million more for TB and HIV

The Western Cape Government has welcomed the announcement of an additional R590 million in funding for provincial HIV and tuberculosis (TB) programmes, following a major shortfall caused by the withdrawal of international donor support earlier this year.

The allocation, revealed by National Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi during his recent budget speech, will help stabilise vital services that were at risk across the country, including in the Western Cape, where a funding gap of approximately R360 million had threatened the operations of around 10 nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) and the jobs of nearly 700 healthcare workers.
