Proud women who won't wheesht
Paisley Daily Express
|August 16, 2025
I was extremely proud to be invited to contribute an essay to a book promoting the importance of gender, alongside esteemed writers such as JK Rowling.
“The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht’ has since been widely acclaimed, and occupies a place on the bookshelf of many who care about the rights of women and girls.
I was especially honoured to be involved as one of the first women of colour elected to the Scottish Parliament.
Communities across the black, Asian and minority ethnic landscape feel particularly strongly about this given the Scottish Government's attempts and their strongarming of public bodies to swipe aside these rights in favour of those who simply wish to assert their gender. But one shelf which won't contain the book, which comprises contributions from dozens of diverse and talented women, is the institution which needs it most.
The National Library of Scotland has capitulated to a ludicrous internal staff campaign to have it banned.
