Fight to keep disability centre

The fight to save the Disability Resource Centre (DRC) is far from over.

Last week, councillor colleagues and I had the privilege of meeting some of the users who are determined that it be kept open.

Anyone who heard the passion, the pride and pain of those affected would be on their side and, as a group of elected representatives, we are determined to do everything we can to try to ensure it is kept open.

Regular users made it clear that, for them, the centre is not just bricks and mortar, it's not just a building. It is a community which is central to their lives.

Somewhere people come to support each other, to enjoy each other's company and simply live proper lives. A place where friends meet. A place of family. A place with a beating heart.

Yet what they are coming up against is a faceless bureaucracy which won't fully engage with them but instead hides behind almost anonymity to make life tougher.
