Council savings plan is 'sobering reading'

The savings needed to ensure Renfrewshire Council remains financially sustainable have been branded “sobering” as targets were agreed at a summit

Financial challenges Councillor Alison Ann-Dowling
Elected members approved a goal of £6.3 million for 2026/27; £8.3m for 2027/28; and £5.2m for 2028/29 at a full meeting yesterday.
The local authority has generated savings of £189m since 2011/12 but a report prepared by finance chief Alastair MacArthur acknowledged it is becoming “increasingly difficult” to continue at that scale.
Councillor Alison Ann-Dowling, Labour group finance spokesperson, believes it is becoming evident the funding model for councils is “not working”.
She said: “[The report] clearly outlines the scale of the financial challenge the council faces.
