Lab-grown sperm: A new hope for male fertility
Orissa POST
|June 01, 2025
Imagine a future where a diagnosis of untreatable male infertility is no longer the end of the road - because science has developed a way to produce human sperm from lab-engineered testicular tissue.
-
This possibility, once considered science fiction, is now at the heart of groundbreaking research led by a team at the University of Limerick (UL). Their mission: to make the production of human sperm from lab-grown testicular tissue a reality. If successful, this innovation could redefine fertility treatment and bring renewed hope to millions affected by male infertility across the globe.
The urgency is clear. Male reproductive health is in sharp decline, and the statistics are alarming. Over the last 70 years, sperm counts have plummeted, while conditions such as testicular cancer, hormone imbalances, and genital malformations - all of which can impact sperm production - are on the rise.
