India under pressure to give market access to US retailers

US Vice President JD Vance was all praise for India at Jaipur during his ongoing family trip. He narrated how the two democratic nations can accomplish much more together. But the good will is not without riders. Though Vance continues to heap praise on PM Modi as talks over a trade deal progress, the White House reportedly intends to press India to give online retailers such as Amazon and Walmart full access to its e-commerce market. Though the two US retail giants operate in India through local units, they face restrictions on holding inventory and directly selling to consumers, unlike domestic firm Reliance, which can open physical stores and leverage its vast retail network to reach customers across the country. The US also wants to sell more energy and defence equipment to India to build closer ties

US President Donald Trump’s administration intends to press India to give online retailers such as Amazon and Walmart full access to its $125 billion e-commerce market, the Financial Times reported Tuesday, citing industry executives, lobbyists and US government officials.
