Fast fashion bane of Mother Earth
Orissa POST
|June 05, 2025
The global appetite for fast fashion — low-cost, trend-driven clothing, primarily synthetic textiles — has led to an unsustainable surge in textile waste, posing significant threats to ecosystems, water resources, and even human health.
According to industry data, textile sales have doubled from 100 to 200 billion units annually, yet the average number of times a garment is worn has decreased by 36 per cent. The result: A staggering 92 million tonne textile waste generated each year, with 11.3 million tonne ending up in landfills.
Experts say the industry is responsible for dumping or burning the equivalent of one garbage truck full of clothes every second.
