Disruption in India's retail landscape
Orissa POST
|June 16, 2025
Kirana stores, the small neighbourhood shops, have traditionally been the go-to source for groceries and daily essentials for millions of Indian households.
They dominate India's retail landscape, contributing to over 85% of grocery sales. However, the swift emergence of quick commerce platforms is disrupting this ecosystem, putting significant pressure on thousands of local kirana stores. The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) reports that around 200,000 kirana stores closed in the past year, with 45% of closures in metro cities, 30% in Tier-1 cities, and 25% in Tier-2/3 cities.
