The City is home to 47,126 stray dogs, accounting for around 3.62 per cent of the state capital’s 13 lakh human population, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) said Monday.

Releasing the stray dog census report, the civic body said of the total stray dog population in BMC area, 23,047 are males (unsterilised), 15,552 females (unsterilised), and 1,124 puppies. “As many as 4,068 male dogs and 8,335 female dogs have so far been sterilised under the City’s animal birth control programme,” it added.

For the first time in Odisha, BMC conducted a stray dog census in two phases from September 18 to 25. The enumeration was carried out across all streets in the 67 wards under the urban local body between 5am and 7am.
